I'm running FreeBSD 5.3. I noticed that when I upgraded rrdtool to 1.2.6, the graphs in cacti were invisble. None of this broken images with red X or even zooming in helped.
Under my investigation, I discovered that I needed to add a backslash to escape the : (colon) character in those lines that start with COMMENT.
I guess that means there's going to be either a patch or upgrade required for Cacti.

Have you check to make sure cacti is set to use that version in setting?

You must be running Cacti 0.8.6d. Then Goto Settings->General and change the RRDTool version.
