SNMP & WMI with Win 2003/XP

Post by tdavid »

hi all,
I am quite new to Cacti. I set it up on linux box and works perfectly to monitor switches, routers, MySQL server and my Apache server.

Browsing the forum, i've read a lot about SNMP vs WMI to monitor Win32 computers.

As my company have many windows servers, I am trying to monitor them. The native SNMP for Microsoft does not provide many informations or my cacti does not not enought of Microsoft SNMP. The only thing i can monitor are : CPU load, disks load and NIC traffic (not even system memory!).

I know there are many SNMP tools I can install to get more informations. But looking closer to the optional components, there is an SNMP WMI component in Windows XP and 2003 that is supposed to provide a link between SNMP and WMI. Has anybody tried to use this to monitor Win32 computers using SNMP to get WMI information?

I believe you have it backwards.

WMI SNMP Provider
"Allows client applications to access static and dynamic SNMP information through Windows Managment Intrumentation (WMI)."

A comapany does provide what you're looking for, http://www.wtcs.org/informant/wmi/overview.htm
