use any db instead of rrdtool

Post by RainerBrunold »

Hello!

I'm new to cacti and was able to install and configure it without any problems. The first netware, linux, aix and windows server are monitored and everything looks very fine!

Just one question about the data store of the poller. Is it possible to put the data into a data base instead of the rrdtool and is somebody using such a configuration ?

Thanks for any tips,
Rainer

I'm no expert, so take my reply with a grain of salt, but I don't think it would be easy to do. Cacti is really just a front end to rrdtool. Cacti provides polling and a web interface to rrdtool, but rrdtool provides the data and graph generation.

You are right, cacti is built to use RRDtool, without it cacti is nothing... ;)

That being said, you can retrieve the values from the RRD's if that is what you are looking for.

Sorry, I think I wrote a little bit wrong .... Maybe thinking in german and writing in english ...

Of course I want to use rrdtool to store the data but maybe I have to use a database for it. I will try to monitor about 600 servers and will try to increase the data lifetime. I will have a more detailed view of the graphs. As a example on a yearly view not only 365 values, one day one value, but maybe all 6 hours one value. That's why I don't no right now if the data will grow so much that the performance is in a db better.

So that's what I wanted to know if I can configure the rrdtool to store it's data in a database and cacti will still work with it.

The answer is still the same. RRD means Round Robin Database - it is a special kind of database. It has its own fixed database format and does not handle any other DBs like SQL based ones.
