Upgrade Help

Post by bobthenewguy »

Hey guys, I'm every green when it comes to Ubuntu still learning but I'm getting old.. and the curve is getting rough. I can follow a procedure but figuring out the little package here and there to make cacti update correct is just beyond me. I've watched countless youtube video's, read in the forums, the book for cacti... Every instance it provides a small piece to the puzzle but always missing something making the entire procedure fail. I just want a success story for something I feel is probably pretty easy?

Requesting help in the form of procedure to upgrade cacti so I can keep everything all the graphs, templates etc. my current version was installed via apt-get install package including spine and currently on version 1.2.19. running in Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS. I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. naturally when I did it through software updater it broke everything, so I rolled the VMback. I now have a secondary Ubuntu node built with Cacti 1.2.26 on ubuntu 22.04.05 again installed via install apt-get with spine. Can anyone throw me a bone here and help me with a procedure to either upgrade the existing one and\or migrate it to a different server? The last two times I've upgraded I rebuilt every single template, device and graph from scratch I just don't have it in me to do all that work for the next 2+ weeks.

upgrade is easy. Make backup of mysql database and rrd files first.

You don't need apt-get, you can replace files manualy. You can download actual version here
https://www.cacti.net/info/downloads

Replace files, set correct permission and follow upgrade wizard.

Are there any known issues with specific Cacti versions during the manual file replacement process that should be checked before starting?

we are preparing 1.2.29 release because 1.2.28 has few problems. You can use 1.2.29 now. Use code from
https://github.com/Cacti/cacti/tree/1.2.x

I gave up on this, defeated yes. ended up just re-creating all my graphs on a new server. The export option for graphs and data sources helped speed along the process. While I'm disappointed to lose my historical.. The job is done.

There is no reason to lose old graphs, you cannot delete mysql database and rrd files.
