show variables like 'sort_buffer_size';
SET GLOBAL sort_buffer_size = <higher than returned value>

If error disappeared, save this value in your mysql config:
sort_buffer_size = xxxxx
Let the Cacti grow!

If the server is real small, you need to pay real good attention to the Tech Support page and tune the database properly. Our recommendations are a little aggressive, designed for larger installs. So, just be careful.

Thanks all for the inputs !

Unfortunately could not get this working on Windows :-(

Switched to Linux box ,setup Cacti from scratch and everything is working like a charm .
