Fresh install, missing the create a graph dropdown.

Post by bwalker »

Hello all, first post. This is my first attempt at anything newer than Cacti 0.8.x.

I've set up a new Debian Bullseye x86 machine, fully updated. I installed Apache2 for another reason, then installed Cacti using the repository. I let it install everything it wanted, including PHP8.2. After a bit of confusion over the new interface, I was able to add a new device.

I'm trying to add a graph to the device, but according to the documentation, I should have a dropdown that allows me to select the template I'd like to use. This is not present. I've tried setting my device up different ways, but I feel like I've missed something in the settings. I've tried a couple of different browsers, disabling adblockers, etc. with no luck.

According to the docs at https://docs.cacti.net/Graph-a-Single-SNMP-OID.md there should be a "Create (Select a graph type to create)" directly below the template list associated with the device.

What am I missing here?

I see it right there in your screen shot. If the drop down is empty, it means you didn't import the templates during setup.

That's not the drop-down I'm referring to. It's not even in the documentation.

The one I'm referring to isn't even there. It's missing, not empty.

Here's what i'm referring to:

You can see there's a dropdown at the bottom of the template list. I don't have this dropdown.

I've tried using the drop-down under the "Create new template" as you've suggested, it will allow me to create one graph of that particular type, and then no more. Even that graph doesn't seem to work correctly, the OIDs polled by it simply return "U" when I can manually poll them and get data.

The UI has changed a bit since those screen shots were taken, so the button is no longer is the same place any more. The pictures in the documentation just haven't been updated. So yes, we are referring to the same dropdown.

What graph did you attempt to create, and what were the results from the log? What does your configuration look for the device?

I don't have access to the machine at the moment, so I will have to look at the logs tomorrow for exact information.

However, this is what I remember from my work today:

When I select the template I want to use (SNMP - Generic OID Template,) it allows me to add my information and OID, and saves it. After a while, the graph shows as valid, and the poller begins hitting the appropriate OID for data.

However, I would like to add more graphs with this template. The template type is no longer available in the dropdown. That is the issue - I need to create multiple graphs with this template. Why is the template type no longer present? Do I need to add multiple instances of this template elsewhere in the config for this device?

What would you like to see from the logs? This version is quite a bit different than what I'm used to, please be specific so I know what to look for.

You need to set the Graph Creation Method to "Advanced" under Console > Configuration > Settings > General > Other Settings > Graph/Data Source Creation Method > Advanced"

It was already set to advanced. I remember seeing that in another post and tried it with no luck. That's the only thing I touched on that page.
