Hello
I've been looking at cacti as a possible replacement of Xymon. Can cacti monitor, hardware components (for example, disk space, CPU usage) and system services (NTP, NFS to name a few)?

Yup all that stuff either through snmp or your own integration. Many people will use SSH, I just write plugins like the MicroTik and HMib plugins that collect the data async and then it really scales.
