Recommended Ubuntu/Linux for latest Cacti 1.2.x

Post by GGA »

Hello community
so cool to see all these new cacti releases. Thank you all for the hard work you spent into this nice tool. For me is now the point to say goodby to my old 0.8.8x setup and say welcome to the new 1.2.x release.
But therefore I have to choose a new Ubuntu Version and started with Ubuntu 22.04LTS, even if the install guide wants to use PHP7.x.
But I was more thinking about moving all my old plugins/templates to the new server and see how much work this would give to me. Export and import is no option, most import-errors, sometimes even export-errors. So I moved a template page by page until it was working. So far, I love this new version. But i have a few points I'm thinking about.

I'm not sure if I should stay on Ubuntu 22.04LTS or if I take the step to the older Ubuntu 20.04LTS. There are a few error messages in cacti.log but maybe this is nothing big.
This happens only when I login but it seems to work.

Code: Select all

What about the PHP-version? We still have weathermap in use and there is one for cacti 1.x, but it seems not to work with PHP8.x. I'm not sure if I would need other plugins, most of them like Aggregate or Spikekill are already integrated. So maybe I should think about leaving weathermap...

This was realy my big point. :D

Now the cosmetic questions, is all compaired to my old cacti behavior.
Can I disable this hovering side menu close to each graph? I would like to see it permanently.

How can I fast and easy switch between normal 1Column tree view and 4Coloumns Thumbnail tree view? The old version did it only with setting the Thumnails checkmark.
There I had to enter 4 Thumbnail Columns and TreeView(Single Pane) in profile.
I played around a bit with the new user profile seetings but didn't find a working setting.

PHP 8.1 should be pretty good with the upcoming 1.2.22 release. Every few point releases, there seem to be a couple of PHP 8.x issues. Just review the CHANGELOG. I've been running on PHP 8.1 for a while and MariaDB 10.5.X and RRDtool 1.8 no issues. It's super smooth user experience.
Before history, there was a paradise, now dust.
