Creating graph and data source

ver 1.2.17

I am creating a graph and data source to graph a temperature sensor (generic snmp device). I have a data source that is using the data input method get snmp data with the sensors OID. The OID has been confirmed with mibbrowser. I have also a graph template that is referencing the data source and everything looks good. When I try to add the graph to the device I get the following error.

Operation successful. Details below.
Graph not created for Data source [name of data source] due to bad data.

I have checked my snmp version and that is correct. An I see the basic management information when looking at the device under management confirming that cacti can query the device. I also have looked at the logs but I don't see any entries. Is there anything else I should be looking for?
