Honestly, we need more information.

What version of cacti, have you installed all the patches?
What OS?
What version of PHP, mysql, rrdtool.

What is the error you are getting?

Have you run the poller at least one time, is the poller running from cron/scheduler every 5 minutes?

General, it doesn't work posts don't cut it, we need more information so we can help you.

I removed the database and reinstalled a clean copy.
Nothing is generated in rra folder.

I am running a Slackware 10.1

I'm adding a device:
From devices > add > I fill hostname with ip of router and SNMP comunity with the one set on the device, then I use create button.

SNMP works ok cuz I got:
SNMP Information
System: Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software IOS (tm) RSP Software (RSP-ISV56I-M), Version 12.1(23)E, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2) Technical Support: http://www.cisco.com/techsupport Copyright (c) 1986-2004 by cisco Systems, Inc. Compiled Thu 29-Jul-04 23:
....

Then:

Associated Data Queries

Data Query Name Debugging Re-Index Method Status
1) SNMP - Interface Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [235 Items, 28 Rows]

I click "Create Graphs for This Host" and select the interfaces I want and use create button.

This is listed on top of the page:
+ Created graph: MXXXX - Traffic - Se1/1/3:0
+ Created graph: MXXXX - Traffic - Se1/1/4:0
+ Created graph: MXXXX - Traffic - Se1/1/5:0

Nothing seems wrong till now.

In debug mode:
Data Source Debug
/usr/local/rrdtool-1.0.49/bin/rrdtool create \
/var/www/virtuals/cacti/rra/router_traffic_in_48.rrd \
--step 300 \

RRA:MAX:0.5:6:700 \
RRA:MAX:0.5:24:775 \
RRA:MAX:0.5:288:797 \

But no rrd file is in the rra directory.

Of course in "Graph management"

RRDTool Says:
ERROR: opening '/var/www/virtuals/cacti/rra/metropolis_traffic_in_43.rrd': No such file or directory

In the cacti.log is not even a single line added.

The pooler has this entry in the cron:
*/5 * * * * cactiuser /usr/local/cactid/bin/cacti-cron.sh > /dev/null 2>&1

where cacti-cron.sh is:
#!/usr/bin/bash
cd /var/www/virtuals/cacti/
php poller.php

I can't think of anything else you may need, but please feel free to ask if you need more.

Does the user that is running the poller have read/write access to the log and rra directories?

Also, if you run the "php poller.php" manually is might give you an indication of what the problem is.

Turn on Debug logging for the poller and post the cacti log from one polling cycle.

This is strange, I turned on debug logging for the poller and my log file is still empty.

You should redirect the STDOUT and STDERR of your cron job to a text file for a few polling cycles and see what your poller service id is having problems with. It will be very clear once you do that.

It works now. Here was one of the problem:
The cron was failing to execute the job:
*/5 * * * * cactiuser php /var/www/html/cacti/poller.php > /dev/null 2>&1

Looks like cron did not accepted the user parameter. I replaced that with:
su -c "php /var/www/html/cacti/poller.php"

And now works fine.
Hope this will help other users too.

Certain flavors of Unix provide differing flavors of crontab support. For example, Solaris has individual user crons and you don't specify a user in the actual "master" crontab. So, you can't get rid of system administrators yet!
