Organizing graph's on devices

Post by CptnBlues63 »

So my coworker and I are just finishing up a completely new install of Cacti v1.1.38 on Redhat 7.5

We've reached the point where we've created our devices and graphs and are now placing everything on the tree. In some cases, I'd much rather place a device than it's associated graphs.

Case in point, my data center. I have quite a few switches in there each with quite a few graphs attached to each switch. It's simpler (and neater) for me to create a branch on my tree called "Data Center" and place the devices (switches) in it that folder than it is to create a folder under "Data Center" for each switch and then place the graphs in their appropriate subfolder.

My problem is, I can't arrange the how the graphs appear when I use the device. I want them in a particular order but I can't seem to find a way to adjust the order of the graphs.

Is there a way to do this?

TIA

As far as I know, they are in the order they were sequenced for the device. There isn't currently a way to change that. You could use an automation rule to place graphs onto the trees.

I thought that might be the case.........I'll maybe have a look at redoing the graphs and see if I can get the order I want by changing the order with which I add them to the device.

Automation rule?!?!

Can you explain that in a little more detail please.

I've learned a whole lot more about Cacti doing a clean install as vs the CactiEZ I used last time (which I've now replaced) but there's certainly a lot more I can learn. If an automation rule will help me achieve what I want with less admin time, I'm all for it.

Thanks

I can't go into full details right now, but there is an "Automation" section which discovers devices, graphs etc. I think there may even be youtube videos on how to use the older version before it was integrated which may help give an overview of how it works. With 1.2, network discovery can actually be configured during installation to find devices and automatically add them.

I imagine the OP has figured this out by now, but for anyone else, you'll have to go under Management --> Trees. Then choose the tree with the folder of graphs (or I think you can have graphs just under the tree at this point). Clicking on the folder should bring you to a list of graphs within that folder. Here, you can manually move them in the order that you like by dragging and dropping. It's not a perfect science, there is a bit of a technique in doing it and it took me a while to figure out how precise you have to be about where you want the graph to go. It works like a charm once you know what you're doing!

In some cases, if you end up "losing" the graph (I keep doing this and have no idea where the actual graph goes, as it doesn't disappear into any of the other sub-folders around the one I'm in), you can always go back to Management --> graphs and then re-add the graph from the console list back to the folder you need it in.

Hope this helps!

I believe you can set the order to be inherited/alphabetical etc for a tree.

Right, or manual, which is whatever order you want them to be.
