Suggested Upgrade Procedure

Post by xefil »

Hi all,

I've a cact installation fresh updated to version 1.2.9.
Then I've a second standalone installation on a DMZ with version 0.8.7g.

The second installation could not be updated easly because it's on an old server. In addition, the server is in a particular network to monitor some network devices, so I cannot remove it.
BTW the primary server can comunicate via dedicated LAN to the secondary server, but cannot reach the network devices that the secondary server monitors.

My goal is to install a fresh new secondary server, migrate the data from the old server to the new server, update the cacti instance to latest and transform it to a remote poller. In that way, The data should be moved / migrated to the primary server.

Could someone suggest me the main steps to accomplish my needs?

Thanks!

Lots of people have migrated from old versions to new. Having done the upgrade path myself as well as the build new, starting fresh is the only way I'd go.

However, there are plenty of topics on people detailing how to make the leave from 0.8.x to 1.1.x or 1.2.x. For example: viewtopic.php?t=59002 or viewtopic.php?t=57504

Thanks a lot, I'll give a look there.
I'll start as well with a new fresh server. Only to know how to deal with the old version.
Thanks Jeeves!

Sorry, another question.
Do you have suggestions, after upgrading the old cacti, on how to move those data into the existing installation and have the old server as poller?

The architecture actually is:

Standalone server A updated with devices configured and local spine poller
Standalone server B (new) with nothing installed
Standalone server C (OLD!) with old cacti version, devices configured and local spine poller

The Goal:

Standalone server A updated with devices configured (monitored by local poller) + devices from server "C" (monitored by remote poller)
Standalone server B as poller for only the devices previously on server C
Standalone server C powered OFF

You can't have 0.8.x polling for 1.2.x, it simply won't work.

Hello @netniV,
No problem having all updated. My goal is to have the remote old cacti updated as well, but I've no idea how to move the monitored remote deviced to the central cacti installation and let then the remote cacti only as poller.
a sort of backup->restore into an existing installation.

Remotely monitored devices are part of the remote poller database. These are then synced periodically back to the main database. If you add them in the main as well, they will effectively be attempting to poll twice, but from what I know of your setup, the main poller will simply fail to find them.
