Weather Plugin Idea

Post by mmccaugh »

All,

Doing some quick searching I do not see this right now, but I had a crazy idea.

In v1.x.x utilizing the 'sites' setup I have begun defining all of my physical datacenters, and one of the items we can enter is lat/lon for the site allowing pretty precice location..

https://openweathermap.org/forecast5

SO I was looking at this API, and had the idea of a plugin integrating the physical locations of your datacenters with the ability to pull back weather related info, and potentially alert on activity that could impact normal operation.

Noting this is less of a concern if you are working with all hardened DC's that can withstand an F5 tornado etc.. But that's not always he case for every site you have, and storms have a decent chance of knocking things offline.. Or even if your power stays up that's' no real guarantee you will not experience related issues (Like connectivity, or Voice).

Has anyone ever looked at this? Or does it actually exist already and I have somehow missed it? If not I may try to fool with this API in my spare time, I'm not sure what I can do with it just yet but it seemed like an intriguing idea.

Not heard of a plugin that reports on the weather. I'd say go for it.

Lat and Long in 1.2 for sure.
