Not able to monitor Dell servers via snmp - Host SNMP error

Post by chenoi »

Hi,
May I know If anyone here able to monitor your dell server via cacti... I have enable snmp (public) on my idrac of each servers but when add in cacti it will give host snmp error.
To test snmp seting on the servers works..I test with snmp tools and able to communicate (snmp) with the servers and able to monitor the ports/etc.

Thus, snmp on the servers is already enable and works but not via cacti.
I have no problem to monitor others host (VM, switches, etc) via snmp but the problem only with dell servers. I have change different template and snmp version..still the same...what could be wrong...please assist and help me...

MANAGEMENT_NODE (10.44.41.20)
SNMP Information
Host SNMP error
Ping Results
ICMP Ping Success (0.572 ms)

Appreciate someone could show me the way. Thank you.

Have you been able to use snmpwalk from the cacti server to the dell servers using the same version, community and auth?

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

I'm not sure how can i use snmpwalk from cacti.. I'm using solarwind bandwidth gauge just to verify snmp credential is ok to the dell server. So far the test using it show that snmp connection to the servers ok and I can see some of the dell interfaces ports.

In cacti, I've seen this under snmpagent cache
.1.3.6.1.4.1.23925.1.14.1.2.2 cactiApplDeviceDescription CACTI-MIB Column Data read-only MANAGEMENT_NODE

I really hope to resolve this as it supposed to be easy to monitor servers via snmp. Please advise me further and please help. Thanks

Basically what NetNIV is saying is that the server that Cacti sits on shares the same IP as the Cacti software, so running a successful test from the server itself would tell you that your credentials in the Cacti software are incorrect.

What you will find is that some systems have default 'view only' list for snmp which is a limited set of information. Linux systems do this, for example, where anything but localhost is only allowed to get the system name, location and description. Things like the in/out bytes of a network interface, are not available until the configuration is updated.

Hi,
Thanks for your input.

Currently cacti is deployed as a VM in a server and the IP of VM is on the same LAN of the Dell servers.
From cacti I can monitor other hosts either in VM or switches (HP/Dell) and I have tried using SNMP tools (standalone tools) just to check snmp configuration of the servers and I manage to established the connection to the servers using that snmp tool (solarwinds)

The problem is the dell server snmp not detected/establish via cacti... but why other hosts (VMs/switches) can be monitored by cacti but not dell server (enable snmp in idrac). Puzzle.... :(

I am getting the same error 'Host SNMP error'

I am using a version 8 Dell DRAC

Cacti 1.1.38

The device list shows the correct SNMP uptime:

Re: Not able to monitor Dell servers via snmp - Host SNMP error

Post by gdsotirov »

I'm having exactly the same problem right now. The snmpwalk command from the Cacti host works just fine, but Cacti adamantly gives "Host SNMP error" without further information what the problem could be. I tried setting different SNMP parameters (version, timeout, max OIDs), but nothing seem to make it work. However, I noticed that "SNMP - Interface Statistics" data query is able to retrieve interfaces information, so it's very strange. How to debug what's behind "Host SNMP error"?
