Raritan PX2 template?

Post by nmitguy »

Hello all,

Does anyone have a template for Raritan PX2 devices handy? We've been using the template from about31693.html in order to monitor Raritan PX devices, but it looks like the MIB changed for PX2 and the PX template no longer works. I'm researching how to build my own now, but I'm pretty new to SNMP so it's slow going.

Thanks,

Steven

Edit: Specifically, these use the PDU2 MIB. I believe the PX3 devices use the same one. Our cacti install is version 0.8.8h.

Your best bet is to use SNMPWALK to obtain the OID's being returned by the device, then look up what each of these OID means. A good tool to use is OIBView or OIBTool (I can't remember which it actually is) as that can load MIBI's from a compiled library and displays what it finds in a tree. There is a free and paid version, but I have just used the free one.

Once you have those, and know which ones you want to graph, then these need creating in your template/datasources

Thanks, that's what I'm currently working on figuring out now - If I do manage to get something cobbled together I'll see about throwing it up here.

It looks like I may have spoke too soon about the PX templates, as we're seeing some oddities watching the temperature and humidity using the template from there. If anyone has successfully used that template to monitor temperature and humidity, I may need to ask you a few questions on how you have the probes configured on the Rariatan end (we have cacti reporting correct temperatures for some systems and correct humidity for others, but we seem to have trouble getting it to give proper numbers on both - I think it may be due to the way probes are configured on different devices).

If you have a graph that's showing the data, you can click on the cog icon to see the data that's being held for that graph. You can also use the data source debug to see what data is being returned by a device. Finally, if you want to debug a device, you can add that in the settings area and it will record lots more information that normal. Just don't leave it on too long or your logs may start filling up as I believe it also includes SQL stuff.

The issue with the temperatures and humidity seems a little more interesting than that, and I'm thinking the issue isn't on the cacti end - on most devices we're getting accurate temperatures but not humidity, on one device we're getting back good humidity but the temperature doesn't seem to track like it should (instead, it seems to be getting back the value of humidity and using that instead of the temperature value). As all the devices are using the same template, this suggests to me that the issue is on the individual devices - I'm thinking it has to do with the way the external sensors are configured within the Raritan. Essentially, running an snmpget or snmpwalk against the OID used in the template for temperature on the device with working humidity returns what looks like the humidity value, while asking for the humidity on most other devices (that show accurate temperatures in the graphs) returns something like the temperature value.

As a follow-up, in case anyone else is having issues with temperature and humidity with Raritan PX devices using the Dominion PX template, it looks like they need slightly different OIDs - .1.3.6.1.4.1.13742.4.2.4.1.3 for humidity and .1.3.6.1.4.1.13742.4.2.2.1.3 for temperature seem to be working on our devices. I'm still attempting to cobble together something for PX2s, but it's slow going, although I at least have something that can watch environmental sensors at this point. If I manage to get something together that I can upload, I'll update this thread.

If someone else with a working PX2 template happens to wander through first, though, please - feel free to toss it in here!
