rrd filename

I created a data template for a perl script which has multiple outputs (like field1:val1 field2:val2...etc).

When I created the data template and added some data source items, I noticed that the rrd file was named after the first field (like field1 above), the "Internal Data Source Name" of the first field. That seems wrong. It seems like the name of this rrd file should be based on the name of the data source template. After all, once I start adding multiple fields to this data source template, it contains multiple different "columns" of data, not just data from the single column. Or have I misunderstood something?

In the image below, my rrd file is named 'localhost_connects_8.rrd', but it's really just the first field in my mailstats data source.
