i'm seeing these in my Apache error log, when trying to update some of my data sources. i have a feeling it is caused by some characters i use in the data source names? In particular, dot and dash.
Could someone confirm?
Sure, the DataSource page says "Name: The name used for RRA files, among other things; no spaces or strange characters.", but "strange" is pretty meaningless. Are the supplied strings checked for the "strange" characters and reject them?
ERROR: unknown data source name 'toaster1_nyc'

First of all, that error is being caused by rrdtool. It is complaining that you are referencing to a data source name that it does not have a DEF for. Cacti will normally handle this for you, unless you are using a data source for a GPRINT and NOT the AREA/STACK/LINE.
You'll want to double check your graphs to make sure this is not the case. Future versions of cacti will not care as much where/how a data source is used on the graph.
The name itself looks completely valid.
