My problem is that I cant get it to scan anything.
I am missing some basic info about what the minimum opties are to use to get it to scan my network.
I have used other tools like Nagios whithout to much problems
so Help please

I guess it is to complicated for me in the short run.
I will look for an other free monitoring tool which is better understandable for me.

Back at cacti for odd reasons. (P
I have been busy for a while so I did not spend time on cacti until now.
Despite that cacti is installed and running after adding some devices, now I am still unable to view some graphs .
I have enabled some templates and query's but I still see empty graphs.
What is that 1 setting that will popup that graph on my screen.
Which link am I missing here.
Please help a noob out off noobness.
( Is there actually a ' hidden' autoscan option somewhere ?)

There is quite a learning curve, but if you mangaged to install it and understand snmp you'll figure it out.
Start of simple and look at the builtin templates for interfaces, then look at the scripts and compare the output from your devices.
You can use snmpwalk or a tool look ManageEngine MIBBrowser (download the Free 2009 version).
The most usefull plugins to start with in most situations will be Thold and Monitor.
The manual available for cacti is for an older version, but still has alot of valid information, read through it, it explains how cacti works.
Also go to the website of Tobias Oetiker and read up on RRDTool (not only usefull for cacti, alot of products use this). http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/
If you have questions, come back to the forum, search for answers, or ask the questions, but try to be specific.
Scanning your network is now builtin with automation (network discovery).
But don't forget this tool is more or less built for network admins, that know what they want to monitor.
Don't try to monitor for the sake of monitoring, it should be a process where you have application or device owners that need to tell you what the thresholds are and what to look for.
If you start from there, you'll find a solution to do most of that in cacti.

Re: new to cacti
Hello ,
Thanks for the reply.
you said something about automated network scanning within cacti.
I really tried to find that option with no success.
The only option that looks like it would do the trick (discover tab in cacti 1.2,
RRDTool) does not show me any results , no matter what kind of info ( hostname , ipa).
So I put in all my router and switch ipa's by hand but with no more result then
Status Down or Unknown. Despite that my network works without flaws.
I must be missing some basic info I think.
Duh .... I think I found it though, while typing this reply.
An option in the device config.... called "SNMP Community" .
checking other devices now....
yep , that did the trick.
There is also a "SNMP Community" setting in the configuration settings.
It works as far as I can see now.
Thanks for the positive reply.
regards.

That was a statement of goodness and wishful thinking. Somehow, you did not take it that way.LeendertSchouten wrote:Thanks for nothing. Great help, Osiris.Osiris wrote:Good luck. It works.
