RRD / RRA resizing

Post by Chipa »

Hi All,

I've searched, but I cannot find a full process for this, so I'm sorry if it has been answered before.
I've inherited a Cacti installation that is running perfectly, except for the RRA settings, The steps/rows are incorrect for 1 minute polling that it is using.

1. I understand how to change the RRA's correctly
2. I understand how to use resize.pl (http://docs.cacti.net/manual:087:8_rrdtool.04_resize) correctly - And its potential pitfalls.

What I cannot find information on, is how should I make these changes.
For example:
1 - Comment out poller job in Cron
2 - Change RRA settings in web interface
3 - Copy RRD's to backup location
4 - Run resize.pl against RRD's
5 - Uncomment poller job in Cron.

As I do not know the inner workings of Cacti well I'm a bit worried I may be missing something there.
Can anyone expand on this or suggest a better approach?

Looks ok to me. You can also just disable the poller using the web-interface ( Console -> Settings -> Poller, right at the top )

Can you explain this step 2 a bit more in detail ?
-> 2 - Change RRA settings in web interface

I assume you also include the change of the "Heartbeat" and "Step" values from the Data templates ? ( can be done on the DB using sql commands )

Thanks for that, I hadn't seen a better way to disable the poller.

Only the RRA steps and some rows are incorrect. From what I understand this just means any new rrd file is created incorrectly.

Everything else is already set correctly for 1 minute polling I believe. The only issue I'm fixing is how far back the data is kept. For example my yearly graph only goes back about 4-5 months. And the others don't have the resolution they should when zooming in.
