Network device interface monitoring

Post by dieselboy »

One of the good things about cacti is that when you configure a device, cacti will complete an snmp walk of the interface mib to present you with a list of interfaces to graph.

I need to monitor a bunch of network devices physical interfaces using snmp for the purpose of early warning of issues. As the network is resilient, single or sometimes multiple physical link failures will not present itself as an issue or an impact.

I have nagios, but configuring hundreds of SNMP checks, which will likely change in the not so distant future is not only time consuming but extremely arduous and painful.

Does a plugin for cacti exist whereby I can make use of the logical snmpwalk, so that I can checkbox / pick a number of interfaces to monitor for conditions other than (1) ie up status? I also need to monitor route tables to ensure correct next hops. As there would only be a handful of these to do, I don't mind manual configuration here. Is there a plugin that would allow me to do this as well?

To put it simply, I am looking for a shortcut. The steps would be something along the lines of:
- configure the device / ip details / snmp details
-- cacti does an snmp walk on the interfaces
- pick interfaces to graph and/or monitor for a condition
- alert if the condition changes from what is expected

the same goes for route tables and other items. SNMP poll a mib, if X is returned then = good. If !X then alert.

Obviously nagios does this but the hard part is monitoring hundreds of switch ports.

Thanks for any pointers.

What about something like:

creating a new data query for the interface status snmp oid, create the "graphs" and then set a Thold alert? Is it possible to do this without creating the graphs? I guess not as Thold wont work.
