Easier plotting for external RRD files?

Post by Horus »

Hello,

I generate by RRD files using collectd and caci for graphing.

As far as I know, for each external RRD source I want to plot I need to create

*) Data Template: Because RRDs could have a different number of data sources. Possible work around: Create a data template with the maximum number of data sources ever needed, name them e.g. ds1... dsN. When instantiating a data source from the template give invalid names to the dsX you don't need. Would this pose a probem?

*) Data Source: Ok, fine with that. I assume the RRAs don't matter when using an external updates RRD?

*) Graph Template: A graph template is tied to a data template. Having data source (dsX) set to None on a graph does not work (graph is not plotted). So I need at least one graph template for one, two, ..., N data sources.

*) Graph: ;-)

Is that correct? Just want to know whether I miss a shortcut and my mental concept of cacti is correct.

Thanks,
Florian
