thold plugin error message

I have loaded thold and keep getting an error message "You are running MySQL in Strict Mode, which is not supported by Thold". I'm running Cacti under windows using the 0.8.8g installer. It loads MySql 5.6. I have changed the MySql mt-default.ini file entery from sql_mode=NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION,STRICT_TRANS_TABLES to sql-mode=NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION or sql-mode=TRADITIONAL or sql-mode="", each time with the service down and then restarted. I continue to show restricted mode when I query the SQL server using SELECT @@sql_mode. Can't figure out what's going on.
