WARNING: Result from SNMP not valid. Partial Result: U

Post by TheLoneITguy »

TL;DR Adding a never before used device (Watchdog 15 enviro monitor) results in that device's graphs blank and the above error in cacti.log.

I've been running 8.8a on a Windows box for over a couple of years now. I monitor switches and Windows boxes. On the switches its mostly up/down alerts but for Windows boxes I'm also monitoring CPU, memory, and HDD usages. But all of this is built-in stuff.

We recently bought a Watchdog 15 with remote temperature sensors. I'm attempting to add the device so I can graph temperatures over time. Alerting would be secondary issue as the Watchdog can do that itself.

What I have done:
-VIA the Watchdog's web interface it has correct network and time settings. It is reading temperatures correctly and is locally graphing that data. Downloaded the onboard MIB for OID reference.
-Using snmpwalk/snmpget/Paessler SNMP Tester I can query and receive correct data from the Watchdog (Temp/%RH/Dew Point).
-I have created 5 Data Templates for each of the 5 data points I want to pull from the device. In each I have specified the correct OID.
-I have created 2 Graph Templates. 1 for Temperature graphing and another for Humidity graphing.

Things I know:
-K.I.S.S. I'm using default public Version 1 SNMP settings.
-I'm using net-snmp 5.4
-My poller is cmd.php
-SNMP Timeout is 500.
-Maximum SNMP OID's Per SNMP Get Request was set to 10. I bumped it to 15 but to no affect.
-RRDs have been created.

Are you doing this FROM the cacti server?

In Cacti:
Try changing to snmpv2
try decreasing the number of OIDs per request to 1.
try increasing the snmp timeout to 5000

At first, no, I was running snmpget/walk from my workstation. But I ran the commands from the server and it worked successfully. And as an aside, I upgraded to net-snmp v5.6.

I made each of those individual changes. None made a difference. I've left the changes in place for the moment.

One thing I wondered, is it necessary to make a data query? I have not done so because I was unsure of how to make the .xml file.

I've rebooted the server just for the heck of it.

Also, see the attached files for screenshots of things and stuff.

Well that all looks correct from what I can tell.
No, you dont need to make a Data Query to get a few OIDs (well technically you could, but probably overkill for your needs). The fact the query is timing out, is the root of the problem. Might need to dig into it further with a packet capture (wireshark / message analyzer).

Can you perform a snmpwalk from the server on 1.3.6.1.4.1.21239.5.1.4.1.5.1 and paste the output here?

Sure thing:
