Hi folks,
I've just installed cacti version 0.8.8d with rrdtool 1.2.15 and I'm getting the graphing in squares.
The default cacti installation selected 5min/30min/2hr/1day averages and they work fine. When I added in hourly(1min average) graphing afterwards, the data in that one graph is squared off, if that makes sense.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
On the older cacti server, the graphing is normal. It's running cacti version 0.8.8a with rrdtool 1.4.5
I've added some screenshots below.

I've just upgraded to rrdtool 1.4.5 but am still getting the square wave. Doh!
Re: Cacti graphing in squares?
Adding an RRA afterwards has no effect on current graphs. Also, you would have to make sure you modified the data template to use the 60/120 step/heartbeat.

No, but that RRA will be using the same overall settings as the others.
In the Data Sources: RRAs, my settings are as follows but they're the default:
The Data Input Method is "Get SNMP Data (Indexed)"
My Data Templates for "Interface - Traffic" has all the associated rra's selected.
The Step is set to 60 and the "Use per-data source value" is unchecked.
The Data Source Type is set to "COUNTER" and the Heartbeat is set to 120, with :use per-data source value" unchecked.
It's running on a Windows box so the poller.php has been set up in Task Scheduler every 1 minute.
It's almost as if it's graphing every 1 minute but polling every 5 minutes, so the same data is repeated for the 5 minutes? resulting in the square?

Code: Select all
Hourly (1 Minute Average) 1 500 14400 Delete
Daily (5 Minute Average) 1 600 86400 Delete
Weekly (30 Minute Average) 6 700 604800 Delete
Monthly (2 Hour Average) 24 775 2678400 Delete
Yearly (1 Day Average) 288 797 33053184

Re: Cacti graphing in squares?
Well that's interesting... I think I've fixed my issue but I'm not sure how it worked.
I fiddled with the RRA values but put them back, and the graphing stopped showing new data entirely. Argh! They were blank from the time that I fiddled.
I had to delete the data sources and re-create them, but the new graphs don't show a square wave. Go figure! I'm not sure what I did to fix it but I'm glad it's fixed.

Re: Cacti graphing in squares?
1) updating rra defs does NOT update the existing *.rrd files. Thus, no changes to current graphs. you must either delete the existing rrd files so they're recreated or manually issue 'rrdtool tune' commands.
2) the 'steps' you're seeing in the 1 min graph is normal. Count the lines and minutes between each major horizontal line -- the minor lines are 5 min each.
