syslog on cacti database

Post by Jay44Jay »

I want to use syslog plugin (version 1.22-2) in cacti 0.8.8a. in the simplest manner.
I am running cacti on raspberrypi (model B), with several plugins like monitor, discovery, thold, mobile , settings plugin.

Now I want to add syslog plugin.

This global tutorial
http://docs.cacti.net/plugin:syslog.config
is very specific about cacti on external database.
But what is the complete tutorial to get a working syslog, when I use the cacti database?

On
http://docs.cacti.net/plugin:syslog
What does this message mean :
"You must either install syslog-ng or rsyslog binary packages for this plugin to properly operate. In addition, the Cacti Settings plugin is required."

rsyslog without rsyslog-mysql is already installed on my raspberry pi, is that enough to proceed ?
Can I just throw in the syslog plugin, extract it and install and enable it in cacti web gui?

I tried by installing the syslog plugin (version 1.22-2), but the plugin web gui is not showing any syslog messages.
What else do I have to do ?
Do I need rsyslog or syslog-ng with this design?

I installed the syslog plugin, but syslog is empty although two network components send syslog messages to cacti server.
Any idea what is missing?

I don't know how many of you may be using this ... but I found a major bug in it today.

It has to do with an "ID" that needs to be unique for every entry on the built tree. However, the current code doesn't do that, and collisions of IDs are ugly.

I should have a fix out by 1:30pm Eastern US. However, upgrading will involve a new patch to html_tree.php - you'll have to undo the previous patch (which, if you followed the instructions appropriately, will just involve moving the backup file over to the patched file) and then run a new patch. Instructions will be available on the blog post and Cacti docs for the plugin.

Sorry guys - as I deploy my 9 or so installs, I'm tripping all over gotchas.
