Not able to save data sources

Cacti 0.8.8a.

I have a curious and maddening situation where the graphs I have create are not displaying accurate traffic information. Looking over the Graph Item Fields, I notice that the Data Source is incorrect for the graph. I use the pull down to select the correct source and save the graph, but upon re-opening, the sources are incorrect (but still one of the 3 options provided). What could cause this inability to save the correct data source? the values should be clean as it's just a matter of in or out traffic.

Is Cacti installed from source or RPM/DEB?

I would check your server log files for PHP errors and see if something is causing it to not save.
