Plugin to compare IPv4 and IPv6 traffic

Post by BlastDV »

Hi everyone, I wanted to know, is there any plugin that allows me to view traffic comparision graphics between IPv4 and IPv6?

I would like to view, for example, a pie chart that indicates how much traffic is traveling trough IPv6 in comparision with IPv4.

Is there any plugin for that?

Thanks in advance!

Not currently. Honestly I am not sure if there are any routers out there that report IPv4 and IPv6 separately either.

There is no standard MIB for that feature.
By the way, our routers do not show separte statistics for IPv4 / IPv6.

Does your router provide a counter for polling? Figure out.
Cacti Version - 0.8.8h - Poller Type - SPINE 0.8.8h
MySQL - 5.0.54 - PHP - 5.1.6 -RRDTool - 1.2.23 - SNMP - 5.1.2
Plugins - Banner 0.32, Camm 1.6.7, Dashboard 1.2, Fix64bit 0.4, Monitor 1.3, Passwd 0.1, Settings 0.71, Tools 0.3, Realtime 0.5, Rrdclean 1.1, Spikekill 1.3, Syslog 1.22, Thold 0.6

Hi everyone, thanks for your answers!

We're using Cisco Routers, and no, they don't report separated traffic, all IPv4 and IPv6 traffic is going trough the same "wire".

I think the best solution to this would be a plugin or app that sniff every outgoing packet in order to check whether if is IPv4 or IPv6.

Ya, I am not sure that is something that anyone is really going to want to do. Its a lot of work for almost no real payoff. Instead of sniffing traffic (you would have to do port mirroring or promiscuous mode on a trunk port to make that happen) you may try just exporting netflow v10 instead, and then write a script that parses it and just keeps count of how much data is sent via IPv4 vs IPv6. Then occasionally write it to a file or database to pull into Cacti for your viewing pleasure.

Cisco routers with an IOS above 15.1(4) are supporting counters for IPv4 and IPv6. Take a look at the index.
