Thresold for changes on network trafffic

Post by desscartes »

Hi,

I want to monitor with thresolds inbound-outbound traffic on router.
I want to send alert messages when traffic changes (like %20 changes inbound traffic) on trafffıc-in or traffıc out on my router.
How can I do this?

Sorry I am newbie on cacti, help me:)

Thanks

Yes, it is very interesting idea and not only for inbound-outbound traffic.
If there was an opportunity to specify not only bottom/top limits, but also on how many the % can change any value, it significantly would save time

You need to use the baseline options of Thold to achieve this. Be forewarned, alerting on network traffic % change is never a good idea unlike you like your mail box full of alerts. Unless you are an ISP with a pretty steady bandwidth consumption rate, you are probably going to see spikes all over the place which will set off alerts.

I use the baseline options of Thold. Besides schedules of network traffic there are much others which sharply changing show that something broke. Now the human can trace it only and it would be desirable automatically.

As I said, use Baseline (change the Threshold Type to Baseline Deviation). This allows you to specify a percent up / down. So for instance you can alert if you deviation 50% higher based upon data over the last 30 minutes (or whatever you set)

Change Data Type back to Exact Value and you are done.
