Data thresholds with alerts, via email or snmp

Post by jaime_pineiro »

If data threshold are exceeded alerts would be sent to email, snmp etc.
This would make this great software, complete!

Planned, mostly written by a contributer but implementation is a bit off, you might say. It is a high priority, but not the highest right now.

Any idea how long we are talking here? A month, a year? I want to get my server distro setup with a tool that does both, but I want to do it relatively soon (a month or two). I did a fair amount of research, and couldn't find anything that looked as nice as cacti that would do both (graphing & uptime/threshold alerts). Which is why I want to hold out, but I don't know how long I can.

Ideas?

We may be able to "PUSH" the up/down notification into 0.8.7. However, the full blown v1 implementation of Event Management will not take place for at least 6 months as I can best guess.

Real $$ donations to this GNU project will help us prioritize or course. How's that old saying go "beggers can't be choosers" or something like that.

Getting at least the up/down notification would be sweet.

I really do wish working on this distro was lucrative, there are several GPL projects I use that are worthy of donations. Unfortunately it is just a spare time project, but then again it seems most projects I see are too.

TheWitness,

Can you describe the general idea of threshold monitoring and notification via email or snmptrap? Maybe we could help you in some way?
I mean, what features and how you plan to do? Do you plan to make some threshold settings for a group of graphs or just for each graph separately?
Please, give some clues on that and we will do our best to help you.

Mika,

A very active poster Phil Yuksa has developed most of the event management stuff. He has done an excellent job. We have been so tied up with 0.8.7 development that he may have put it on the shelf.

The event management we had envisioned would be template based as hosts are today. We would then provide the user the opportunity to override template settings on a per data source basis.

However, that whole thing is a way out. However, Phil is our man!! He can be reached via e-mail at: pyuska@shitworks.com

I am going to withhold comment other than the following:

1) It does provide rudamentary additional functionality that I would like to see.
2) It does not meet the complete set of requirements planned in future versions either as a plugin or as part of Cacti (Threshold Templates, E-Mail Distribution Lists). (aka I want more)
3) However, it is great to see the GNU world supporting us. Great effort!

Phil Yuksa has a good start to a more complete threshold add on, but this one will work for now.
