Update link or button

Post by tarzan_055 »

Dear developers,
I wonder why not put a button or link to update cacti automatically. I am running other web applications that support the auto-update like wordpress and piwik. no complains about cacit just if possible it would be great
Kind Regards

Not likely implemented because each installation can be highly customized between distributions and what sysadmins do. Yes, it would be handy... although not really all that hard to do a manual upgrade every ~6 months.

I think at least the core components should be automatically upgraded.

It's true that a lot of customization is done by admins; for example, I have a bunch of one image files in the installation directory to "brand" the server for my company. Of course, there are also third party plugins installed. But these things should not be touched by an automatic update anyway.

The way it is now, the update/upgrade howto basically says that we should install a new Cacti server from scratch and then copy over the database and RRD files from the previous installation. That is ugly and time consuming and EXTREMELY sub-optimal. It is the main reason why I avoid updates like the plague. (The OTRS helpdesk software is a similar mess, by the way, so Cacti is not alone.)

The point is: An average Wordpress installation - at least in my world - is also customized like crazy, but Wordpress nevertheless can automatically and properly update itself. So products like Cacti (or OTRS) should also be able to do that. Cacti is already hard enough to use and maintain as it is, a little help on the update/upgrade side of things would make our lives a whole lot easier.
