On example, as MRTG config's - only in text files.

I don't see that happening for Cacti.

Cacti is built off of a database, not flat configuration files.

In future versions, api calls will be available for scripting and external interaction with cacti.

But we will not be using flat file configuration files.

Nagios is a great example of a system that badly needs to use a database rather than config files. It's really bad. Cacti has too much cross referenced info to use config files. Once you figure out how to use a mysql console you can fiddle around with the database content.

After my experience with Nagios, I would tend to agree. Call me complacent, but I don't mind the flat files, even monitoring over 500 hosts and 4000 services. But I had a method to my configuration files madness. :)
