[solved] SNMP Error, Windows 7, Cacti v. 0.8.8a

Hey guys.

I apologize if this has been covered before (numerous times?), but I continue to run into an SNMP error when trying to add my device (router).

I installed Cacti on Windows 7, using BSOD's Windows installation, and performed the post-installation steps.

Prior to installing Cacti, I (attempted) to setup my SNMP on Windows, which seemed successful.

Before I tried installing it on Windows, I was attempting to install it on Ubuntu I had installed on my system. When installing the Windows cacti I assumed the Ubuntu version would not interfere, so did not uninstall it... (could be the problem?)

... There's more; Upon the initial installation of Windows Cacti (which I am currently running/having trouble with), I failed to exit my firewall, and received an error message. I then restarted, and uninstalled all the components, and finally Cacti. After rebooting, I reinstalled Cacti with the Firewall inactive, and received no such error.

What I am trying to accomplish is monitor the total bandwidth through my router (supplying internet to computer, ps3, etc), so that I can assure I am not going over my monthly limit.

I must admit I am new to both Cacti, and SNMP. I've spent a couple of days scouring the net trying to figure it out myself, but now I've got to ask you...

how did you validate this? Is an snmpwalk against localhost successful? The cacti.log shows this is not the case and/or firewall is blocking the traffic.

First, I went to Turn Windows Features On or Off, then went down to SNMP, and checked both SNMP and the sub-box. Once they finished installing, I followed the steps at this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324263.

I did not follow the steps under the "NOTE: NOTE: If you have installed additional TCP/IP network devices, such as a switch or a router, see Request for Comments (RFC) 1213 for additional information". (Under "How To Configure SNMP Agent).

I went on to complete the steps under all the headings; communities, security.

SNMPWalk: "Timeout: No response from 192.168.0.1"

My router appears to have a subnet mask, to a 255.255.etc port. But if I recall this is normal.

Doing SNMPWalk with Firewall disabled yields same results (Timeout).

Here's a snapshot of my SNMP Services "Trap" and "Security" tabs...

My computer (insists) on running Windows Security Essentials. I will attempt SNMPWalk after disabling WSE from startup. I saw no firewall configurations in WSE; so I just left it running (assuming it wasn't blocking anything).

[EDIT] I think I might have found the problem... 192.168.0.1, though the address I access my router from, is not my Internet IP address... I will try with the address indicated under the routers "Gateway status". (70.79.28.something)
[EDIT] This did not seem to make a difference, after changing in SNMP Trap and in Cacti...

One more question; in post-installation instructions (For Cacti Windows), you say to set the database_username and _password to the right username+password. Is that the password you use for Cacti, mySQL, the wifi password, or the router its self's password?

None of the above. There are only two steps you should follow:
* Set the Cacti scheduled task user/pass
* Set the PHP Timezone

All the info below is for validation and/or further troubleshooting. as you can access the cacti webpage, the mysql user account is not the problem.

so this proves snmp at least against your localhost is functional. I'd suggest a little more generic test of: snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost system but yours works too. anyways, use that same command (using the correct IP) and test against some other devices. In cacti, the localhost device should be showing an snmp status along with finally having data collected and graphed, right?

Not good. click the green circle next to each data query to manually refresh it. Do any of them now return more than 0 rows? All of them should be valid on a windows system.

Not every device has snmp. Are you sure the router does? validate with a snmpwalk. Does it respond with data?

Not sure why you keep obsessing about the mysql password. it's fine. leave it alone. If Cacti still functions, then you havent broken anything.

I apologize for the creation of this thread.

I realize, now that you have walked me through some steps, what the problem was the whole time.

I was using the incorrect IP address. I had been using 192.168.0.1. As soon as I inputted 192.168.0.10, the SNMP error went away.

So for anyone else encountering this error, ensure you are entering the correct IP.

Go to your command prompt, enter ipconfig. If you scroll up to the Wirless LAN adapter section, there will be IPv4 (in my case) address, and a Default Gateway address.

The IP you want to use is your IPv4 address when configuring Cacti.

At least, this worked for me.

I apologize for troubling you with this, when the solution was so simple. But your assistance did result in finding the solution to the problem, so I'm totally grateful!!
