eth0 in/out howto..

ok.. how can i do an eth0 in/out bytes or bits? is there a shell script for it rather then using snmp? i cant figure out how to configure snmp for the life of me!!

it would be easier to use a script (perl, shell, whatever)

anyone wanna help me out?? :)
