Cacti Install - MYSQL Probs
Sorry for the somewhat easy question but I'm fairly new to linux and cacti and am trying to install cacti on CentOS 6.3.
I get the CentOS install no prob, and I've installed the dag.wieers repo and installed Cacti via "yum install cacti" using that repo, but I can't seem to get past the mysql configuration. I've also tried this doing the completely manual install following the 14 page Cacti SNMP Management doc, too. Different messages though.
I'm looking at a number of docs:
1) Cacti SNMP Management - Installation How-to for Linux (http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/con ... How-To.pdf),
2) The Cacti Manual (http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/con ... How-To.pdf),
3) HowTo: Cacti 8.8 Source Install on CentOS (http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46997) and
4) Install Cacti (Network Monitoring) on RHEL/CentOS 6.3/5.8 and Fedora 17-12 (http://www.tecmint.com/install-cacti-ne ... ora-17-12/), but all have different scenarios for how to do the initial config for mysql.
Which one should I follow? The problem I'm running into right now is when I try paragraph 2.5 of "The Cacti Manual" I get:
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
I could hunt down these error messages too but it seems each time I do I get no where.
I'm trying to do this in the specific order that is mentioned in these docs and start the services but since they are all different I can't help but wonder which one I should really be following.
I've tried other docs but each time I still have an issue with mysql. I've tried mysql forums, too for help but can't seem to figure out which is the right way to go.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Re: Cacti Install - MYSQL Probs
That last link seems to be pretty straightforward so I am not sure where you are having issues. It seems from the errors you posted, mysql isn't started. You may need to try starting it again, and then check the mysql error logs as to why it isn't starting.
If all else fails, maybe you should try out CactiEZ (the link is in my signature). Its basically the same exact thing you are trying, but it does it all for you.

Re: Cacti Install - MYSQL Probs
Thanks for your response cigamit. After I posted that error, I have to agree, it seemed pretty straight forward and I probably look like a fool. But that was after I had just spent an hour or 2 trying get other installs working where they kept failing on the mysql password assignment. ...albeit with much different errors.
I've reinstalled CentOS a couple times now to get this right and simply got frustrated when trying to follow the manuals regarding the mysql config.
I do have a copy of CactiEZ but I wanted to learn how to install and use Cacti from my own build.
If all else fails I guess I just spend a few more hours digging through mysql forums and docs.
I probably should have left out the error message and just stayed with my original question which was: "Which documentation should I follow?" as they all differ a little bit and I want to understand.

Re: Cacti Install - MYSQL Probs
Being this is the first time I've attempted to build a linux server I have to ask this question, too:
When building something like this Cacti server does it matter if I perform an install using yum to install the dependencies or should you install the dependencies manually?

Re: Cacti Install - MYSQL Probs
Starting again fresh this morning I've been able to resolve my 'mysql' problems so please disregard that...
yum install cacti installed a lot of dependencies but it didn't install mysql-server. Kind of important...
