Data Input Templates ?

Post by alinux »

Hi
I have 3 graphs I need to create, basically all are the same but differ in hostnames, each graph has 30 custom inputs, so I need 30 data input methods where only the destination hostname differs, all in all that is 90 data input methods.

The approach I normally take for custom graphs is create data input method, create data source, create graph. But for such a large number of inputs this is going to take forever "30 Data Inputs/30 Data Sources/30 times add input to Graph" and since almost everything apart hostnames is the same there ought to be some different approach, any input please ?
Regards

Actually, once you create the data and graph templates (each with the 30 items), you don't have to do it again. That's the benefit of a template; create it once, use it many times...

Can you please elaborate, if I do it the way I am doing it now, the server IPs are hardcoded into the data input methods with the OIDs, so those will need to be recreated for all.

Then make the IP field dynamic (aka enable the 'Use Per-Graph Value' or 'Per-Data Source Value' setting).

I strongly recommend you read through the script/template guides in http://docs.cacti.net/
