Distribute cacti across two networks?

Post by sherl0k »

Hello.

We have one central cacti instance and using spine for polling. Cacti can make SNMP queries across the entire network (Network 'A' I'll call it). Everything works great in that sense.

We have added a new network environment (Network "B"). As of right now, the only way B and A can see each other is by a single box in B using a VPN tunnel to access A. If we could get a full site-to-site VPN, we would but that is not possible.

That single box in B that can see A, I was wondering if it were possible to install cacti on it, set its SQL database to the one living on A's cacti instance, and poll everything in network B so graphs from both instances are in one, central location.

Would the poller from A attempt to poll the network in B? Is there a way to tell spine to send requests to only certain hosts? Or is there a better/alternate method to distribute cacti across multiple environments and have one central location for all the graphs? I've looked into using SSH tunneling but that would require a tunnel for every host in the second network. The same goes for VPN tunneling - I'd rather not create tunnels for every host.

Thank you.

Currently, there's no official support for multi-site polling. There have been ideas since long. The one who may have gone beyond that boundary is TheWitness
