General questions

Post by attroll »

I did not see a forum for posting general questions in. Please forgive me in I am in the wrong place or out of line.

I colo my server and recently had a file start sending data out and I exceeded my bandwidth by a lot and it cost me a lot of money for overage fees. I am looking for a monitoring program that will report to me. I am looking for a couple of things in a monitoring program. Here is what I would like:
1. Monitor bandwidth and report to me via email and online graphs and charts.
2. Automatically send me charts via email daily and maybe weekly.
3. Have a user friendly control panel for changing settings and configuring the monitor program.
4. Alert me when I reach a predetermined bandwidth limit.

Does Cacti do all this?

Thank you

All are supported. You have to install a few plugins on top of Cacti though:

1) Nectar - For Daily/Weekly Reports
2) Thold - For Alarms
3) Settings - Core Plugin

With Cacti 0.8.7h, and the aforementioned Plugins, and a little training, you'll be all set.

I am not linux smart. What I mean is I have a tech team that does most of the stuff for me. I know very little. Basically enough to be very dangerous.

If I have my tech team install the cacti program and the above mentioned plugins, will I be able to take care of everything else from the control panel. Or am I going to have to do everything with lunix in the command print mode?

If not, you should add the discovery and autom8 plugins as well.
