Per the thread found here: http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?f ... 57#p214657
My hostnames contain periods, like 'device.location.domain.tld'. When the discovery plugin discovers my devices, it truncates the hostname to just 'device', which is non-descript because I have about 40 devices called device. Having them all called the same thing makes it hard to identify which of the 40 I actually want to look at.
Any workaround?
Discovery plugin truncating hostnames

Re: Discovery plugin truncating hostnames
I hacked a fix for this myself, but it would be great if someone could sanitize this and make it part of the release version of the plugin. I have do doubt that my hack has broken some sort of compatibility somewhere.

How has the hack treated you so far? I agree, kind of risky assuming it is something that would make sense to be included sooner than later. I have been reading some reviews of programmers online and it seems that the one's who know how to handle this kind of situation the best are the best reviews. Do you guys ever see those reviews, the ones on angie's list?jakbeatz wrote:I hacked a fix for this myself, but it would be great if someone could sanitize this and make it part of the release version of the plugin. Re: Discovery plugin truncating hostnames
Based on the latest conversions with the OP, we discussed the discovery/autom8 interaction. Currently, we are thinking about integrating both. So the requested feature (use "long" dns names vs. using hostnames) should be available as a configuration option in the resulting plugin.
The fix resolves the issue for the OP bit drops a feature that was recently implemented. A patch that I would accept should present a configuration option to choose between both ways

I did fix this in the latest SVN. However, what Gandalf states is accurate.
