I'm using Cacti since several years and used it to graph tons of different data's for different projects, I believe Cacti is a fantastic tool for all the sysadmins we are and one of the most successfull open source project with it's unbeatable community. But it's now almost a year that Cacti 0.8.7g has been released and the project seems stalled.
Looking at the RoadMap page and with the technology evolution there are still some areas to improve/develop and I feel a little bit disapointed when seeing such a usefull tool which I'm using in my day2day job since 5 years being abandonned. I already tried to find alternatives but was always coming back to Cacti as no other tools are as flexible as Cacti. Zabbix graphing capabilities are too poor, Zenoss is too complex, MRTG is not user friendly, etc...
We might say that Cacti is mature and don't require any more ehancements, but graphing a 10G interface require some hacking, modifying the order of a lot of graph items or tree items is tedious, defining new templates is not a straighforward operation, a better "Tree" display (à-la dashboard) would be greatly appreciated, an AJAX interface would be usefull for the configuration part, etc... etc.. there are tons of things that might still be done to improve our favorite tool.

Unfortunately my experience in software development is not good enough to further improve the project and I would not pretend being a developer as I'm more focused on infrastructure than on code running on it; I know open source projects are made by passionates during their free time and that sometimes their private life does not allow them to continue what they started and it is probably the most frustrating thing in the open source world, Cacti is not the only project suffering of this.
