utilization trend...

Post by deja vu »

Hi,

I am completely new to cacti, this is pretty neat!!

Q: is it possible to a add utilization trend on the graph? Like what would the utilization be in 2 month time, etc..
Where should I start, should I start to hack on php, rrd or mysql..

thanks!!

I actually have no idea how you would attempt this with cacti or rrdtool for that matter. You could double check the rrdtool docs, but I don't think Tobi has included such functionality. If anything, you'd have to hack rrdtool to make something like this feasible.

Trends

This could be accomplished with a server side script that was able to access and read rrd files. It would read the rrd files and determine the 5 point average (or whatever) and then post that information on more than likely the monthly graph for utilization.

Vitalsuite from Lucent handles these types of user defined graph attributes but it does the graphing dynamically based upon you input. To my knowledge it does store that data long term.

I don't know if it would be realy useful for all timeframes. It would be more likely to use the primetime averages on a daily basis and plot that as a trendline. If the trend exceeds some value for a certain sized interval, then page and operator. With my organization, peak times are from 8:00a - 3:30p. I would ignore all other utilization and it would not be a part of the trend data.

The next time I look at Vital, I will provide some feedback.

A lot of commercial performance monitoring software has this feature (Concord Network Health, BMC Patrol...). I think maybe this is a question worthy of Tobias Oetiker, and the RRDTool mailing list. Try posting your question there.

Just a suggestion,
Aaron
