Hi,
I've got a bunch of Cisco LAN-Switches with dozens of interfaces each. Frequently interface names change (I use "reapply suggested names" for this) but also new devices get connected.
Put in cacti-lingo this means I've got to generate new graphs for newly activated interfaces on the switches.
In order to set up graphs for all active interface I use autom8: The autom8 rule basically matches on a certain hostname (just for testing) and limits generation of graphs to interfaces with "ifAlias is not empty". Under Console -> Graph Rules -> (Edit) -> show matching graphs I see all of the corresponding interfaces.
BUT - as soon as I go for Console -> Devices, select the device in question and select "Apply Autom8 rule(s) to device" not only do I get graphs for newly activated interface, but I also get new graphs for interfaces that had already been active!
Put in another way: Once I run autom8 on a box I get duplicate graphs for every interface that has already been graphed before. This is a complete mess, because I have to manually (!) delete every duplicate graph...
My understanding was that autom8 creates graphs only when they're not there already.
Any ideas what could be wrong here?
Thanks much in advance,

Re: autom8 - generating duplicate graphs :-(
This is not an intended behavior. I need autom8 trace from cacti.log to debug this

Re: autom8 - generating duplicate graphs :-(
I have to report the same excactly problem with duplicated graphs. This happens not always but sometimes. I tryed to grep "autom" some lines of my cacti.log in the debug level with no luck. Could you please Gandalf advice us what to search in cacti.log and with what log level settings??
Thank you!
Thank you!

When graphs are generated via browser interaction, please make sure that the web server is allowed to write to log/cacti.log

Thanks to your hint I chowned/chmod-ed the cacti.log and now autom8 logs to cacti.log.
To give it a shot I ran autom8 on a Cisco Core-switch (6500). I had 537 graphs before running autom8 - and 803 afterwards. Tons of duplicates so say the least.
For example:
sw1-core-rz - Traffic - Gi1/1/1 - sw1-s1-0 (T) - this graph has been there ever since I set up cacti
After running autom8 I got another one for the exact same interface:
sw1-core-rz - Traffic - Gi1/1/1 - sw1-s1-0 (T)
The only difference is that for the first one dimension is 120x600 while for the latter it's 120x500; this might be due to the fact that the new one doesn't have any data yet.
I'm enclosing the corresponding parts of cacti.log - the part where autom8 ran.
Thanks much in advance for having a look into this...

So that's a different graph template - they aren't the same graph.ejcacti wrote: The only difference is that for the first one dimension is 120x600 while for the latter it's 120x500; this might be due to the fact that the new one doesn't have any data yet.
Weathermap 0.98a is out! & QuickTree 1.0. Superlinks is over there now (and built-in to Cacti 1.x).
Some Other Cacti tweaks, including strip-graphs, icons and snmp/netflow stuff.
(Let me know if you have UK DevOps or Network Ops opportunities, too!)

And that's very likely the reason why there are "duplicates"Howie wrote:So that's a different graph template - they aren't the same graph.ejcacti wrote: The only difference is that for the first one dimension is 120x600 while for the latter it's 120x500; this might be due to the fact that the new one doesn't have any data yet.
