frustration with cacti

I'm finding cacti to be a big frustration. What should be a simple tool is not. I can't find anything that explains or shows an example how the host, graph, data templates relate to each other, what are data queries, data input methods, why are they all named similar? Why you would choose one over the other, etc. The docs are almost useless, it just takes you through a very basic example, making sure you know nothing. Was cacti made to be difficult, but look nice and easy?
