How to determine syslog logging directory?

Post by philipz »

I have searched the help and the forum but could not find an answer to this obvious question...
I have the syslog plugin installed on my logging server and all logs go to /var/log/messages on my freebsd install with syslog-ng enabled.
How does the syslog plugin know where to look or which syslog is installed? I get no data at all although the logfile is growing all the time.
First I had just syslogd running but I don't think the plugin is compatible. I installed syslog-ng afterwards and reinstalled the plugin but still no result.

Here's the debug output:

Code: Select all

[me@J-Cacti-Test /usr/local/share/cacti-0.8.7g/plugins/syslog]# php -q syslog_process.php --debug
SYSLOG: Syslog Table is NOT Partitioned
SYSLOG: Deleted 0, Syslog Message(s) (older than 2010-09-22 days)
SYSLOG: Unique ID = 3
SYSLOG: Found 0, New Message(s) to process
SYSLOG: Found 0, Removal Rule(s) to process
SYSLOG: Found 0, Alert Rules to process
SYSLOG: Moved 0, Message(s) to the 'syslog' table
SYSLOG: Deleted 0, Already Processed Message(s) from incoming
SYSLOG: Updated 0, Hosts in the syslog hosts table
SYSLOG: Processing Reports...
SYSLOG: We have 0 Reports in the database
SYSLOG: Finished processing Reports...
10/22/2010 12:40:30 PM - SYSTEM SYSLOG STATS:Time:0.13 Deletes:0 Incoming:0 Removes:0 XFers:0 Alerts:0 Alarms:0 Reports:0
EDIT: this was intended to go into the Syslog plugin thread; not sure how to move it...

It does not look at the files.

Read the documentation: http://docs.cacti.net/plugin:syslog

I was under the impression that the syslog plugin took care of generating the mysql tables or even capturing syslog messages
I have it all set up now with rsyslog; works great so far and looks very useful.

Thanks!
