yum erases my syslog-ng; how to stop it?

Post by GlueGuy »

Three times now my syslog-ng has gotten erased by a yum update. This is on a year-or-so old Cacti-EZ installation. I think what happens is that an update for syslog comes along, and for reasons I don't understand, yum decides to erase syslog-ng. The only clue I have is this (latest) entry in the yum.log:
Oct 07 06:02:57 Erased: syslog-ng
This may be old news, as this is the setup we currently have running:
Cacti Version - 0.8.7e
Plugin Architecture - 2.6
Poller Type - Cactid v
Server Info - Linux 2.6.9-89.0.28.plus.c4
Web Server - Apache/2.0.63 (CentOS)
PHP - 5.1.6
PHP Extensions - libxml, xml, wddx, tokenizer, sysvshm, sysvsem, sysvmsg, standard, SimpleXML, sockets, SPL, shmop, session, Reflection, pspell, posix, mime_magic, iconv, hash, gmp, gettext, ftp, exif, date, curl, ctype, calendar, bz2, zlib, pcre, openssl, apache2handler, gd, imap, mysql, mysqli, PDO, pdo_mysql, pdo_sqlite, snmp, eAccelerator
MySQL - 5.0.82sp1
RRDTool - 1.2.23
SNMP - 5.1.2
Plugins
  • Create Aggregate Graphs (aggregate - v0.63)
Bloom - Cacti Migration Tool (Bloom - v0.6.5)
    Network Discovery (discovery - v0.8.5)
    Documents (docs - v0.1)
    Error Images (errorimage - v0.1)
    Host Info (hostinfo - v0.2)
    killspike (killspike - v0.1.0a)
    Device Tracking (mactrack - v1.1)
    Device Monitoring (monitor - v0.8.2)
    NTop Viewer (ntop - v0.1)
    Cacti-ReportIt (reportit - v0.7.1)
    RRD Cleaner (rrdclean - v1.1)
Global Plugin Settings (settings - v0.5)
    SSL Redirector (ssl - v0.1)
    Syslog Monitoring (syslog - v0.5.2)
    Thresholds (thold - v0.4.1)
    Network Tools (tools - v0.3)
    Update Checker (update - v0.4)
We're in the process of replacing this older server with a newer one. So I'm just looking for a tip on how to stop this in the future on our new server (which is pretty much up to date on cacti and plugins).

Set exclude=… statements inside the yum configuration to ignore certain packages during a yum update.
