Is cacti ready for the summertime????

Post by Guest »

I just want to know if cacti is ready for the summertime..., maybe the rrds will get confuse with time and cacti wouldn't be able to update the RRDDS or maybe our cacti developers already solved this problem...

Please be more specific. Also include your current Cacti version in your post.

Time theory

Post by Guest »

Hi!, the witness :P I just want to know what would happen when the system time changes... I see in the cmd.php that you get the time depending on the time of the Box (w2k, unix, etc...) that is the time cacti uses to update the RRDs.

The other day I was having this problem with the update time because my computer was working with a future date (one month further than the actual month) so all my rrds were updating with the epoch time of that month. When I realized of the problem I decided to change the date of my computer and establish it to the correct date, but then I was getting the conflcit with time when cacti was trying to update the RRDs.

It sounds logic if CACTI was using a future time to put new data into the RRDs and then I suddenly change the time to a past time it creates a conflict time not allowing the RRDs to update the data with a past time.

Now I have this problem with all of my Win2k systems. The time will be set automatically to new Summertime on October 30th, leaving the time one hour in the past comparing it with the actual time, so what should I do???

Disabling this characteristic of Windows so my system stays with the normal time... or CACTI developers have already solved this problem?

well it continues to work ... all internal time is in UTC ... there is no problem with daylight saving time ...

cheers

Thx, the witness :D you are in every post of our forum, great!, and now my other question well I already experienced problems with the time... , Now I have to use my computer with a future date so cacti can update the RRDs. Do you think I can use a RRDTOOL command to change the epoch time of the last update of the RRDs???, If yes do you think I could lose some data using this command?

That would be a question for Tobi (www.rrdtool.org). You can export to XML and hack though. If you are good with scripts, you might be able to fix it.

Hi the witness :P!!!

Well finally I got the problem with CACTI :( and I lost 3 days of graphs... dont know why it started to run until today at 2:15 am :D... some idea???, my idea was that CACTI was taking or the cmd.php in fact is taking time of the machine and that time is the one CACTI uses to update the RRD's. It would be better if the CMD.PHP took the time in UTC format. It doesn't matter if the RRDs use UTC time to update themselves.. or maybe Im totally confused and lost in this problem....

Let me explain it better...,

RRDTOOL is ok, there is no problem with the functionality of the RRD's and the RRDTOOL commands

I think MRTG and RRDTOOL are too similar in the way they take the time to update themselves..... I dont have any problems with my MRTG graphs. Actually my MRTG graphs have data during this 3 last days, thats because tobi took the UTC time to update the data....,

I think CACTI (PHP, using the time function or any time function of PHP) is taking the time of the system... the time of the computer... the time the computer displays each second (not the time in UTC format).... to update the RRDs and if the time of the computer changes then CACTI will have problems updating the data....I dont know if Im correct but that are the kind of problems my CACTI installations were having
