Reduced polling time by ~50%

Post by tobus »

Hi guys..

A couple of mysql tweaks reduced the already quite fast polling to half of the time.

New:
08/27/2010 05:45:43 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:41.4858 Method:spine Processes:5 Threads:10 Hosts:2341 HostsPerProcess:469 DataSources:25950 RRDsProcessed:18202

HW is:
HP ProLiant DL380 G6
2 x Quad-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5540 @ 2.53GHz
16GB RAM
5 x 146GB Disk-Drives (RAID 10 + 1 hot-spare)

Running Cacti 0.8.7g on CentOS 5.5.

Below the changes to /etc/my.cnf...

Code: Select all

###########
# Performance Tweaks for Cacti
###########
#
# Increased max connections from 500 to 1000.
set-variable=max_connections=1000
#
# Query caching enabled. Results larger then 2M will not be cached.
query_cache_type=1
query_cache_limit=2M
query_cache_size=128M
#
# Log slow queries for troubleshooting purposes... Threshold = 2 seconds
log_slow_queries=/var/log/mysqld.slow.log
long_query_time=2
#
# thread_concurrency...
thread_concurrency=4
If you are aware of some other settings, that might be helpful....... Let me know.. :-)

Cheers!

With a dual quad, you can bump up your thread cache to 32 and thread concurrency to 16.

Hi

Thanks, but doesn't help me on CentOS...

I've actually just read, that thread_concurrency only applies on Solaris..
That would explain to me why the poller got much faster, but the GUI build-up (besides rendering all the rrd stuff) has not improved a lot..

Guess the thread stuff goes out of my.cnf, but cache settings will stay...

Thanks anyways!

Cheers

Depends. Boost is usually a safe bet. Not sure if you are there yet in terms of scalability though.

It also depends on your hardware. I am not that far behind you as far as datasources and rrds go, and I am running between 19-30 seconds.

However, you have a LOT of hosts. What hardware do you have?

My server is a quad Xeon 3.4GHz with 2GB of RAM. Have you tried other values for processes/threads? Are a lot of your hosts SNMP, or do you run a lot of external scripts?

Hi, I don't have CMD.PHP metrics to compare too because it's a new install and I've only used Spine but compared to what other people are posting my time seems long. Could just be my old system though.
