BUG: Updating data template data source does not update RRD

When one updates a data template data source type, say changing it from counter to guage, the rrd files associated with it are not updated. They continue to keep the counter data type (for this example).

Changing data source type from GAUGE to COUNTER is a major change to RRD file. rrdtune command which is used to make changes in RRD file structure even does not handle this type of change. So the only thing you can do is delete the RRD file and let Cacti recreate it with new data source type.
