Baseline's - Do they really work?

Post by beccara »

Hey Guys,

About ready to pull my hair out here, We are trying to use cacti/thold to monitor for changes in Wireless backhaul signal strengths. These graphs are rather new and only have a 2 or so hours worth of data in them.

We added thresholds to these graphs using the default settings and found that they weren't alarming at all so we altered them to the following

Reference in the past: 3600 (1hr)
Time range: 300 (5min)
Baseline deviation UP: 10
Baseline deviation DOWN: 10
Baseline Trigger Count: 2

We found that after the next polling run all the thresholds using this template went to a warning status so we attempted to cause a trigger by changing the Baselin deviation values to 1 in hopes to trigger an alarm, It did not even tho the current values were changing atleast 1db

How do we get this to work? I dont want to have to set manual upper and lower limits for each link

The warning is a baseline alarm. It's a bit misleading. When it was put in there, the Idiot that called it a warning realized only too late that it was an alarm. It is not likely triggering an e-mail because of the same idiots, faulty interpretation of what it meant.

If you are wondering who that idiot, you don't have to look long, you are virtually speaking with him. If you can make the change to trigger the alarm, send a diff to bugs.cacti.net.

I'm not able to get the baseline's to be in anything but an Alarmed State, Can I work with you on this? I'd really like to get baseline working for Wireless signals

Hmm. Ok. I have to talk to Cigamit anyway. Maybe later this evening. I have to prepare for a training class today. It's currently 6:52am. So, it's going to be not till after 4:30pm, or 14 hours till I can do anything.

Usually it is much simpler to send the SMS via e-mail over the provider gateways.
You may have to register and open the gateway on the providers web page.
Then you should be able to send the messages to e.g.
<mobile number>@<provider-domain> like 01710000000@t-mobile-sms.de.
Works for me with t-mobile and Vodaphone.

You will find the how to's on the providers web pages.

Huh?

My issue is that baselines are always triggered no matter if i put the devation at 90% or 10% they are always in a warning state

Sorry dude, I was focusing on a PIA release last night and by the time I received you e-mail, there was nothing left.

I'll be at it again tonight. Hit me up.
