Basic Custom Template Help

Hi,
I am struggling to get a host/graph/data template set working with the special hostname field in a data input method. I want to add the hosts and have the hostname populate the input fields as the IP/hostname required in my scripts. I've added hostname in the Special type code field for the input. I think it's set in the data template ok. The variable is |host_hostname| correct??

I also cannot get the hostname to automatically fill in. I am trying to create a data input method that calls a perl script that is expecting a hostname. When I put <host_hostname> or <hostname> in the script line, I get nothing, even after refreshing the poller cache. I have also tried creating an inupt field with the same names, as well as input fields with different names. I *can* create an input field that is not autofilled by the host info, and in that case everything works fine. Any hints on how I can debug this?
