Installing on Ubuntu, Reality check

Post by arst »

I just finished installing Cacti on an Ubuntu server using apt-get. It appears to work, it shows up with URL: http://OurServer/cacti The graphs do update also.

Now I try to follow the document "Install and Configure Cacti" (under Unix). http://server-a.icommerce.se/cacti/docs ... cacti.html

A number of things just seems different on my server:

* No new Unix level user for Cacti is created
* In cacti home dir (/usr/share/cacti or /usr/share/cacti/site) there is no directory rra or log, so I cannot do:

Code: Select all

chown -R cactiuser rra/ log/
(no such user, no such directories)
* No new line has been added to our crontab (I checked /etc/crontab and crontab -e)

Basically I feel the apt-get installed version of Cacti is a bit removed from what I see on my Ubuntu system.

Questions:
* No need to create a Unix level user for cacti?
* Where is Cacti cron job stored? (Apparently Cacti does update. My crontab has no cacti entry).

If someone can point me in the right direction for Ubuntu/Debian + Cacti... that is appreciated.

There have been some documents both in the forums (please search) and outside.
The basic reason is, that Ubuntu maintainers applied some changes to our file layout and perhaps more without discussing this in the open.
So I'm personally stumped, and more, can't change the Ubuntu package.

cacti cron is in /etc/crond.d/cacti
i run as www-data user (same as apache), this just makes it easier.

Since you installed using apt-get, you can skip the installation document.
Its all already done for you (including the mysql stuff)
.. You are ready to start using your Cacti.

I do suggest you do a,
chmod u+s /bin/ping

This will allow ICMP ping to be used by cacti.
